Corporate responsibility
Taking our community’s health and wellness to heart
At AmeriHealth, we don’t just promote well-being — we help make it happen. From supporting healthy organizations to volunteering at and sponsoring a wide array of community programs and activities, we work to help raise awareness about important health issues and give people tools and resources to improve their well-being.
People who care
The AmeriHealth Volunteer Team connects our current and retired employees and their families with community volunteer activities. It's a comprehensive outreach program that provides a wide range of benefits to a diverse population.
An unwavering focus on equitable health
We know that not all the communities we serve have the same access to, experiences with, and perceptions of health care.
AmeriHealth is committed to addressing health equity and the barriers members may face when trying to maintain and improve their health. To do this, we are promoting culturally appropriate, community-based interventions. The policies, programs, and partnerships we have in place also help ensure that underserved communities have access to primary and specialty care.
Our goal is for everyone to have the same opportunity to live a healthy life.
Leading with intention
We are committed to creating solutions that dismantle structural racism and work toward health justice for all. This includes earning Health Equity Accreditation from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), which supports our efforts to build an actionable framework for improving health equity. It also includes the following initiatives:
- Reducing racial disparities. We are actively working to reduce racial disparities in severe maternal morbidity, depression screening, cardiovascular disease, diabetes control, and many more.
- Eliminating race-based medicine for our members. Race is a social construct not a biological one. We seek to remove race corrections that are embedded in clinical decision tools and elsewhere in the health care ecosystem because they lead to poorer outcomes and contribute to inequities in care.
- Collaborating with providers. We are working with the providers in our network to address unconscious bias, ensure all members have access to the health services they need, and improve health outcomes.
- Engaging members and the community. We are giving members and the community more opportunities to share feedback and participate in advisory committees. Doing this helps us identify where there are gaps in care, what services are needed, and what programs we should be developing. If you are interested in participating, please email healthequity@amerihealth.com.
- Collaborating on solutions. We are collaborating with community partners to identify critical needs in our region and provide support where it is most essential. Our current collaborations include:
- Baby FootSteps® maternity program to help expectant mothers achieve a healthy pregnancy
- Support of Virtua's new Mobile Cancer Health & Screening Unit to provide access to cancer screenings and other services in South Jersey communities, where people need them most
- Thyme Care collaboration to provide members who have a cancer diagnosis with additional support that is focused on improving outcomes and overcoming health disparities
Diversity, equity, and inclusion
People are truly at the heart of our business. The diversity, equity, and inclusion of our workforce and suppliers is one of our core strengths. Our Diversity and Inclusion Council organizes discussion and learning sessions for our associates on a variety of topics. Some of these topics include microaggressions, unconscious bias, generational differences, and code-switching (the practice of interacting differently depending on the social context).
Providing a forum for safe, respectful, and open discussion among associates is essential. It allows us to fully embrace and address the many facets of diversity, equity, and inclusion. It also helps us attract and serve a broad base of customers, design unique solutions for our members, and better fulfill our goal to improve the health and well-being of the people and communities we serve.
Supplier Diversity Program
Through this program, AmeriHealth builds alliances with businesses owned and run by women, veterans, people of color, and members of the LGBTQ community.
